Gerber’s new multi-tool offers uncompromising performance through revolutionary design. The innovative center-axis driver opens to align like a real screw driver, yielding maximum torque and rotation. No productivity is sacrificed with the addition of a 30% longer outboard blade and one-thumb opening sliding jaws. Full size, real tools - the multi-tool just got a reality check.
THE MULTI-TOOL JUST GOT A REALITY CHECK
It's not an act. It's not a fashion statement. The Center-Drive™ is made for real challenges - and works like the real thing - built right here in the USA. Let those other guys pretend to have all the answers. You'll be truly prepared.
WAVE GOODBYE TO COMPROMISE
Second best is nothing to strive for. To trump the multi-tools that preceded it, the Center-Drive had to be real, tough, innovative - and it is. In the inevitable tool to tool showdown, there is no contest.
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
Talk is cheap. A lab can only simulate so much. The real world is the truest measure of success, or failure. From the job site to the garage, see how the Center-Drive is helping real people triumph over daily challenges they face.
Gerber products are built for real life, to be used, and to endure the test of time. Backed by a limited lifetime warranty in North America.
Screw conventional thinking.
It seems so obvious – but until now no multi-tool has ever offered a full-size driver on the center axis with a standard bit. The result is all the ergonomics and torque you’d expect from the real thing, ready at the flick of a thumb.
Cut the B.S.
Get right down to business. A single flick of the thumb gets you access to a full-size outboard knife that is 30% longer than the competition. Don’t worry; reverse thumb support gets the job done in confidence. No compromises – in no time.
Bend it to Your Will.
Adjust to your environment, or force it to adjust to you. It’s your choice. One-thumb opening sliding jaws deliver instant command of the spring-loaded pliers, so you can take control of whatever’s at hand.
Only 3 weeks old and from minor uses and handling it's has started to rust. I've emailed this company twice with pictures and still no response from them. You would think 80-100 dollar tool wouldnt rust.
I'm occasionally working on the back deck of platform supply vessels, and I've been using the CenterDrive for more than a year now. It's a great tool in all respects, and its 'toughness' is hard to beat. I'd only prefer a better quality steel for the big blade.
I've worded my thoughts in German in our biggest German knife forum here: https://www.messerforum.net/showthread.php?139291-Ein-Jahr-mit-dem-Gerber-Center-Drive
Never mind, you'll learn German :)
Great idea, and I was very excited to get my Center Drive, as a replacement for another Gerber the kids placed somewhere and the functionality really seemed to fit my needs.
However, build quality is poor, the sliding mechanism really need to be pushed, the tool creaks loudly when I open the bit holder, the locking mechanism isn’t ok either. And talking about that great idea with the black center bit holder? Well it’s not black anymore, the color rubs off in my hand. Fortunately I’m just a hockey coach needing the tool to quick fix hockey gear, and not doing anything heavy duty, because I wouldn’t trust this very far.
It’s proudly stamped ”Made in USA”. That is not good advertisement for the US.
Just purchased it about a week ago and I really like it. I use it for just about everything. I see the biggest complaint is the cutters, and someone wrote it broke while cutting a small Brad nail. My question is why in God's name are you cutting a nail???? Anyway it's a great tool, a little expensive, but I found it for about 60 to 70 online, so it was worth it
Bought the centerdrive new from Gerber when it was released for like $200 not surprised to find it discounted to less then a $100 product .. less then a year later Gerber. I love the plyer's but The wire cutters are worthless I need replacements but they are overpriced and well worthless even when new might be meant for like max 16 awg... the screwdriver and knife are great and easy to open huge blade for a mutlitool. I actually have pulled a few nails with the prybar.. kinda wished they did something better then a pick and file ... I really wish those wire cutters worked out...
It as been more than a year of heavy duty usage of this tool. What have done so far with it, is everything! Do some job on the car, cutting wood, repair small appliance, breaking ice with the blade and plier, hammering small nail, remove nail from wood and the list go on and on.
I do some batoning with it. It do the job but I bent the lock mecanism of the blade. I put it back in place and it's like a new one.
I break ice with the blade without any damage.
The screwdriver do the job is suppose to do. The plier are very good to. I bend nails, unbend metal sheet. I cut small wire with the cutter with ease.
Cut everything with the blade. It need some sharpening some time to time like every blade but it keep a good edge when you're not trying to cut rock!
Everytime, I need to do a job, I never think if the centerdrive will be able to do it, it will do it! A pocket toolbox in a hand. I will never go out without it!
And the most important, I use the small pry bar to decapsulate a beer after all the hard work I do with it
So this heavy duty guy worth every dollar(even if you paid the full price like I did 200$ cdn but I buy it with gift money)
Was very excited to get this tool but was left disappointed. For cutting power cord cable it is useless, basically had to chew through the cable. The main knife blade would not hold an edge for nothing. If they could re-design the tool to have the same style cutters as the MRO-MP1 and a better quality knife I would give it another chance. As a biomedical equipment tech I need to cut cords and wires all the time so that aspect was very important to me.
Great Idea..Screwdriver is the best in the business BUT Execution of the pliers needs improvement. I brought this concern to Gerber with basically a works as designed response. MAJOR FLAW besides the cutter which mine broke cutting a small finishing nail (I mean small) Gerber fixed it but my inconvenience. The major flaw is the pliers. For large work it is great, for smaller work that requires a nose grab of small material (pulling staples out of the floor after your rip up carpet padding as one minor example) if you squeeze them to grip, the back of the pliers touch rendering you unable to squeeze and get a bite on small items which then renders them useless. So think of all of the small things that come up like that and know they will not work. Had I known this ahead of time i would have passed now it is a drawer ornament.
I got this to replace a Leatherman Wave that I have been using for years. Had to send it for repairs so I picked this up. I love Gerber and would have used their multi-tools a long time ago, but my work requires needle nose pliers and most of the early Gerbers were large nose pliers. The pliers on this set also give me some issues. The close fine, but the design of the tool does not let me get a comfortable grip to use the pliers. I tried flipping them over, but the tool release, made it even worse. One other problem must be with the sliding design, but the pliers twist way to much so I can not get a good grip on something smaller that needs some torque to come loose. This tool will remain a constant carry simply because the driver is awesome. Also I have not had any issue with the cutters or the stripper, but most wire I deal with is 16g or smaller.
I bought the 30–001193 from Walmart about a week ago. I love the idea of this thing, and give big props to whoever thought it up. However, under light use, the spring that makes the pliers stay open is already failing. So much for “one hand use.” Rather than feeling like a tight precision engineered tool that you would expect for the price ( $79 at Walmart), it feels like a loosey-goosey $10 tool. Great concept. Cheap execution. I’m writing this in the parking lot on the way to return this big fat disappointment to the store.
This tool is great but the Carbide cutters are really bad. Mine crumbled on the first cut of some small electrical wire. I can not justify buying the high cost replacements if they are going to crumble as well. I would happily buy some steel replacements.
Same as problem as everyone. Love the tool , hate the cutter blade.
Can’t believe they’re still selling this shit in 2018 when it’s been faulty for years.
Had made the switch from Leatherman, looks like I’ll be going back.
Mine sucks and this is why.
1. The pliers dont close fully
2. The black coating came off brand new out of the box
3. My blade was dull
4. My carbide cutter broke the first time I cut wire
So that's my review!
Hope it helps
So far, Im a fan of these. Its confortable to work with, and carry. The blade is of a nice length, and being 420hc steel, the edge will last a decent amount of time and is easy to resharpen. The tool feels like a quality tool.
My complaints are this.
When i unpacked the tool, the knife blade was not as sharp as you would expect from a $100 tool. Actually, the edge was completely rolled. But about 15 minutes with the lanskey sharpener, the egde was hair popping sharp.
Along with that edge, there was 3 different grind angles on my blade.
The last complaint is a very minor one. And thats the sheath being made in China.
Hey all, I have this great tool too, but as some of you said, while using the wire cutters on thicker wires, my carbide cutters broke too, but not to worry, I have a part number from Fastenal for a replacement set of carbide inserts. It is Part # 2143429. That'll help out some of you who has the tool and still want to keep it for the other qualities. Other than that, I still use this on a daily basis.
I can't say enough good things about my Center Drive! As someone put it after I used it to fix something, it's a multitool that you can actually use to fix something with!
Have had no issues. Carry it every day for the screw driver and pliers. The sheath has shitty Velcro but I liked that it could be worn horizontally. Unfortunately I don’t use the sheath anymore because of the Velcro; it kept falling out. Haven’t had any of the issues with the jaws not closing tight.
In my opinion:
Doesn’t need a clip because I’d rather it stay in a sheath.
It’s got the exact tools I need (pliers, 1 knife, awl, screw driver) without the extra garbage that’ll never get used (scissors, tooth pick, 3 extra knives)
I have used this tool time and time again and it never fail to do the job .. no regrets owning this bad boy !
I thought the centre drive would be a better unit than it turned out to be. Not the quality I had expected. The plier jaws would not close completely and the construction has loose moving parts. The jaw operation is not great and the sheath is rubbish. i have had much better products in the past. Took it back to the shop. Still have my Evo.
I want to like it, love the opening of pliers, the unique center bit criver, thumb rest and spring pliers. but the this unit just isn't built as well as something like a leatherman yet it costs the same.
a dealbreaker for me is no clip. not having scissors sucked too. and a lot of the tools could not take the standard beating... like the materials are very cheap. This one is close but not worth the price tag until they increase the material quality and include a clip. too expensive and not enough use for what it is
I use this multi tool on a day to day bases. It is a must have in my tool belt I do hvac install and having all of the different functions a my fingertips will cut down on having to carry multiple hevy tools. In the commercial aspect of hvac we are always using screw drivers mostly for prying and I have found the can opener works great for prying our small corners of sheet metel. Also being able to throw on a night driver has saved me multiple times from coming down off the roof for my drill when I just have to remove one screw.
Bought the Centre Drive to replace a Leatherman for farm work. Very good knife but it’s one-handed use is completely undermined by the soft, nylon pouch. You cannot put the knife back in the pouch with one hand. So, good knife made useless by a cheap pouch. Please make a leather one-handed pouch for the Centre Drive. Until then, I’ll keeps using my Leatherman.
Love the size of the pliers, the knife and the file. I love the length of the driver and that it accepts standard bits. What I don't like, is the cutters constantly breaking when I cut hard wire. I have since switched to the MP1 MRO. I love it but miss the center drive. Patiently waiting for a fix so I can switch back.
P.S. The MP1 does not have replaceable cutters, and cuts hard wire just fine.
Bought the Gerber to try out because I had a gift card to Bass Pro. I was excited about the canter drive screw driver with the ability to use regular bits. I have hundreds of miles of pipelines I maintain in the summer to take the water to the cattle. Whenever there is a break I patch it up using some clamps which take a 5/16 nut driver so in that regard this tool is perfect because I only have to carry a nut driver bit in my pocket instead of another screw driver. The knife works great for cutting twines and seems to be holding its edge well. The problem I have with the tool is the wire cutter. If you are going to show a "rancher" working on his fence in your social media the pliers and wire cutters had better work on a fence. The first wire I tried to cut with these pliers shattered the cutters so I am not even able to rotate them. I am normally a Leatherman guy and I have never had a problem cutting my barbed wire with them. I had high hopes for this multi tool, but I guess I will be sticking with my Leatherman for now.
Owned a centerdrive since they first came out. Nice mult-tool. Could use a small flat screwdriver. Bit holder is flimsy. I lost several bits because if it so I tore it off. Plus it prevented the pliers from closing completely.
Kind of miss my fisherman multi-tool which this replaced. Used daily for work.
I've had my Center drive for about six months now, and it is the best investment I ever made! Everything on this tool is built tough, and can be used on and off the job. Great work Gerber. God bless the USA!
Great tool, replaced 2 Leatherman tools with this one. Disappointed though that the 1st time I used the pry bar it broke!
Almost Perfect! If you could access the serrated blade from the closed position and the file was upgraded to match or exceed the one on the LM Wave I'd buy three.
I bought mine about 8 months ago and so far the pliers broke, the knife won't lock out, the bottle opener broke. I have contacted Gerber about this issue they said I can not get a refund, but they said I could send it to them and get a warranty repair and it would take 6-8 weeks to be done and I have to pay shipping. I suggested that I could just do a even trade for a different product and i got no response back.
I have had this tool for about 7 months. I do various maintenance jobs and enjoy many things about this tool. First, the pliers flick open easily and are very functional. They grab well and lock open which is a must for me. They are easy to open and close with one hand and work very well. Next, the knife blade is long and has stayed sharp for me pretty well, although I typically carry another pocket knife on me anyway. The lock on the knife works well for me and I have no problem opening and closing it with one hand. The driver arm is long, opens easily and locks open as well. You can use any standard 1/4" bit with it. I have used the driver in a bunch of situations and I have changed some of the bits out of the set; I didn't need 3 flat head bits in addition to the one on the tool. The nail puller is a feature that I found I use more than I expected to. It pulls nails and staples easily and the edges have bent slightly, but it still works fine. The awl comes sharp and has worked well to put holes in plastic, leather, and rubber when I needed it to. I really haven't used the file a ton, but it has done a fine job when I have used it to smooth metal edges or burrs. The serrated blade has worked fine for me, although I really wish Gerber had gone with exchangeable saw blades on this tool. I really like the lock for the serrated blade, nail puller, awl, and file. Having locks on all the tools is really nice and it makes it easy to put them away as well.
My only real complaint is the carbide wire cutters. When I tried to cut a clothes hanger, they broke into several pieces. In other reviews many people had the same issue as me and the replacement set costs $23 without shipping.
In conclusion I really like this tool, the locking tools and one handed opening features make this super convenient and easy to use. If they make one that has exchangeable saw blades and better quality wire cutter blades or non-replaceable wire cutter blades I would buy it real quick.
I paid $150 for mine and so far its the best knife I've ever brought. It has come in handy so many times for those quick jobs that i don't have a lot of time to do and has saved me a few times when i can't find a tool that i need
The Gerber Center-Drive is heavier than most of the other Gerber Multi-tools. However, the Center-Drive is sturdier and well designed. I took mine backpacking in the Colorado Canyon Country. I found multiple uses for this tool. This is a well made professional multi-tool from a world class manufacture. The price is cheap for a tool of this caliber. I highly recommend the Gerber Center-Drive.
I really liked the one-handed operation of this tool. It's great. It is heavier than I expected for sure. The problem, the first time I really needed to use it it broke. I needed to file off a little rough spot on one of my aluminum hatch doors on my boat. As soon as I applied a little pressure and started to file it snapped off. I guess Gerber will fix it? Now I have to pay for shipping to them and wait 4 to 6 weeks. Not as fun a birthday gift as I had hoped.
Very large and clunky! The handle is not very comfortable and there is a gap that does not close between the two sides of the plier handles. The blade is challenging to use due to the size of the handle. I had very high hope for this tool, but is fall short of something you would want to keep on your belt.
Great tool for every day use. The screw driver is practical and I use it more that I would have thought. There are a ton of quick jobs I can do and the full length makes it practical.
The pliers are handy, quick to access and the spring type suspension makes one handed use while fishing or various other jobs easy. The wire cutter is also really good.
quick access to the knife is key, great size blade for everything.
Overall great Multi-tool for all kinds of jobs and everyday use.
I purchased this little gem a couple of months ago and have been wearing it every day for work since I bought it. I am full time on a SWAT team and have carried several different multi-tools over the last two decades. This one is excellent for me. The knife and extended bit holder are worth their weight in gold. Having the ability to use regular bits found at any hardware store is feature I have wanted for years on my other multi-tools. The knife is long enough for most jobs and holds a decent edge. The pliers are also top notch. Easily as good as my Leatherman MUT. I have a old Gerber one handed opening multi-tool like this one, that would pinch my hand every time I closed it. Which led me to retire it quickly. I was nervous this one would do the same, but it does not. Cleaned and lubed the tool when I got it, and it slides out very easy now. Was pretty dirty from the manufacturing process. The only item I wish it had was a set of scissors. Personal preference. Lastly, I purchased this through Gerber's LEO / Military program. Excellent price!!!!! For the money, you can't go wrong. It is just as good as any Leatherman or Victorinox multi-tool. In some cases...even better.
Gerber while this is an over good multi tool you should improve your QC. My multi tool came with some bad burs on the blade. I needed to fix and sharpen my brand new knife. My blade also has some bad lock sticking that I have yet to resolve. The serrated blade needs to be a little sharper too.
Not sure why you used black oxide on the file. While it does look cool I think it takes away from the functionality some. The file also doesn't have milling on the side. My file was super dirty and needed to be cleaned.
I like the pliers. Spring loaded makes them easy to work with. The jaws align very well. I think you can grab a gnats ass with them.
Screwdriver works well. I really like the smoothness of the swing out and positive lock. About time some figured out standard driver bits.
Have not used the pry tool yet. It does seem to stick up some in the handle. I think it could have been replaced by another tool like scissors.
The sheath is nice, but not made in USA. Wish you included the tool to rotate the cutting blades. I like the way the jaws sit flush when closed so it doesn't chew up the sheath. The sheath lettering is a little to much of an add. I used a black sharpie to tone it down some and it seems much nicer now.
This is hands down the best multitool I've owned. Not even comparable to my others (leatherman and an army standard issue gerber 600). I didn't realize how much the one hand operation matters, it changes everything. I'm use this daily and can't believe I was doing work without it.
After using the Center-Drive this past hunting season, I've been impressed with the facelift Gerber has brought to the age old multi tool. Tools flip out quickly and easily with just one hand and the construction is bomber.
Prior to this Gerber Center Drive I've used the Freehand and found it excellent over the last few years. I was disappointed to hear that the Freehand was discontinued but after receiving the Center Drive I'm more than happy. As a rancher and horseman I use this multi tool constantly through the day for any number of repairs and fixes. The one handed opening can be a life saver at times and now with the Center axis bit driver built in, I think I've got everything covered. Well done Gerber!
I personally love this multitool so much I've turned my moto around a mile away from my house and headed back to put it in my bag after spacing on it. Because already the one time I didn't have it... I needed it. I usually have a tool roll on my bike that has pliers, pocket knife, safety wire/zip ties, sockets, allen keys, screwdrivers etc... as I was pulling the roll off my bike the other day to make a quick exhaust mount (mine snapped) I realized I could actually take half of the things out and just throw in the Center-Drive in their stead. I used the fine edge blade to cut through two-inch metal-band-reinforced rubber hose the other day... like butter. Once this thing is in your arsenal, you'll wonder how you ever went without!
I own over 40 multi tools my favorite for long time was the Gerber mp1 because the driver was very useful in my work .....I used Leatherman wave ...but this time you make the perfect tool for a hard worker like me .......I think you improve a lot when you make the mp1,bullrush,mp600 snap on ,and the center drive ......
I've been in possession of the centerdrive for about 15 minutes and I can safely say it's the best multitool I've ever owned. The actual driver alone makes it worth every penny, since it takes all of my Irwin 1/4 inch bits which I find incredibly useful. I really like how quickly you can open the pliers, with just a quick wrist flick they fly right open and you're ready to go. Overall fantastic knife, would definitely recommend over a Leatherman.
Oh boy, I bought it because I thought it was going finally improve on the MP-600. Now since I got it today I now realize Gerber combined the best of the 600 plus a great one handed driver and full size blade. Leatherman surge + MP 600= Center Drive. I love it, it might be the best Gerber ever. The sheath is great, with storage for 8+ bits! Keep up the great work, please have 154 cm version one day or even a blade-less version. I am buy more for Christmas gifts.
It's a good MT, pliers head grips really good and wrench holds awesome in comparison to all others I've tried over last 20 years. Center drive bit holder can't be beat, awl is built strong, file is awesome and actually a useful size, serrated blade is my favorite serrations. That said, there is some negetives. Pliers pop out when squeezing with blade out, there's IMHO to much movement when closed and lock release is plastic and proud so it will break eventually. Overall 5 stars because there's flaws in all MT's but this my winner replacing 20 years of premium MT's. Great job Gerber
Ordered 11/01, received 11/04 and after opening and using it for only 2 days, this tool is a BEAST! Basically, Gerber took the best of the MP 600 and MP1 and constructed a near flawless multi tool. Congratulations Gerber, you finally passed Leatherman!
To make a long review short, the long hex bit driver and one hand operation of the most important tools makes this multitool faster and more convinient than my current one. Goodbye old Leatherman.
The Center Drive has held up very well to the conditions I have used it in. From fixing the Carburetor in the boat motor, to crimping wire sleeves on leaders, un-hooking fish...just been nice having the one tool on my belt that can handle 90% of the work instead of switching from one tool to the next and losing them along the way. Good multi-tool for everyday use. Favorite feature is the easy one hand opening.
